1- Introduction to the Subfamily Nepetoideae Kostelezky
1.1- Overview The Nepetoideae is one of seven subfamilies of the family Lamiaceae or Labiatae (the mint or deadnettle family) in the orderLamiales. The Subfamily Nepetoideae are with 3100-3700 species. There are mostly herbaceous plants, sometimes shrubs or rarely trees. Many species are fragrant aromatic. The stems are often square. The against-constant leaves are usually composed once or infrequently. The hermaphrodite flowers are fünfzählig and zygomorph double perianth (perianth). The five sepals are fused. The five petals are fused, where the crown is two-lipped. There are four stamens present, with two to staminodes can be reduced. The trinuclear pollen grains are hexacolpat. When embryo the base of the cotyledons (is cotyledons) extended, whereby the hypocotyl and the radicle are mostly covered. The trinuclear pollen grains have a hexacolpate aperture. The main ingredients in the Nepetoideae are rosemary acid and volatile terpenoids. There are Nepetoidin A and B, low concentrations of betaines, and iridoid glycosides and in the epidermisof calyx prismatic calcium oxalate crystals present. 1.2- Tribes of Subfamilies Nepetoideae The Subfamily Nepetoideae has 3 tribes: 1- Tribe Elsholtzieae [5 genera] 2- Tribe Mentheae [5 subtribes + 1 Genera Incertae Sedis] 3- Tribe Ocimeae [5 subtribes]
